You can decorate your apartment using just one thing: fairy lights. That’s it.

If you’re anything like me and you live in an apartment where it doesn’t really make sense for you to go all out for your holiday decor - you don’t have kids, your apartment is too small to have people over for the holidays… you’re basically living the dream - but you still want some holiday cheer in your space, just use fairy lights.

Fairy lights are so pretty by themselves that you can basically turn your apartment into a little winter wonderland with one simple action: Piling on the fairy lights.

In this video, I’m going to show you how I use fairy lights to make my apartment look more festive for the holidays in just one simple step.

I want you to walk away from this video with the realization that you can decorate for the holidays with minimal effort and without spending a ton of money.

My name is Steffi and I'm the creator of the style blog Moda Misfit. You're watching my YouTube channel Living Pretty, the place for apartment styling tips and inspiration. Just because you rent your space doesn’t mean you can’t own your style, so let’s find the power in the pretty. Because your style is pretty powerful.

First of all, not all fairy lights are created equal. Here’s the most important thing you need to keep in mind when shopping for fairy lights: they need to have a timer function so you don’t have to turn them off and on every day.

See? Timer. Very important.

It may seem simple enough to turn them off and on yourself every day, but let me tell you, you won’t do it. I don’t do it. You just won’t do it.

You’ll do it for the first couple days, and then you’ll get sick of it, and then you can’t be bothered. If you’re anything like me.

And here’s another thing to keep in mind: fairy lights come in many forms. There are fairy light curtains, fairy lights for holding Polaroids, fairy light trees… There are so many options when it comes to fairy lights that, even though we’re talking about keeping things simple here for your apartment, it’s good to know that there’s some variety within the world of fairy lights. So if you want, you can mix things up a little bit.

And speaking of keeping things simple for apartment life, that’s what really works well for only using fairy lights to decorate. It’s so simple, it’s so low-maintenance, it’s basically just doing one thing - slapping around some fairy lights - and then you’re done. You really can’t mess it up.

It’s very, very easy, but very effective because they’re just so pretty.

The thing that keeps me from going all-out for my holiday decor is I just want things to be simple. It’s a month out of the year and I don’t want to spend a bunch of extra money, I don’t have the storage space to store all this holiday decor… I mean, when you live by yourself, it’s kind of like, why bother?

And so, I really just want to keep it simple but also festive.

Tell me in the comments, is that something that you grapple with as well? You want to decorate your apartment, but you don’t want to worry about having to buy a bunch of new things that you only keep out for a limited amount of time… and then there’s also the storage. Tell me in the comments below if that’s one of your things.

And here’s the main thing I want you to take away from this video: cut yourself some slack this holiday season. Just because you’re not living in a house with a white picket fence and little kids running around everywhere, doesn’t mean that you’re not worthy of decorating, and that includes holiday decor.

For so many of us, it’s gotten so hard to even fathom being able to buy a house and live that good old American dream. Well, I say let’s carve out our own American dream, our own picture perfect holiday ideal.

Let’s make our apartments our homes. And love every inch of them. And love every inch of ourselves in the process. Decorate for yourself. If you want to.

Do as much or as little as you want. I personally find that fairy lights are just an easy way to get some holiday spirit in here without going overboard. I live by myself, there’s only so much I’m willing to do.

And whatever I do in here, I’m going to love every second of it. I love apartment life, and you can too.

If you live in a studio apartment like I do, I want to help you come to the realization that you can make your studio apartment into the retreat that you deserve, so that’s why I created Studio Styling 101, which is a free workbook that you can download here!

It walks you through the three key steps that I took to make my apartment into my dream space. I just desperately want studio dwellers to realize that they too can make their apartment into a home.

Download Studio Styling 101 - it’ll help you get started and it’ll help you realize that it’s totally doable.
